Currier & Ives

The partnership was founded in 1857, five years after James Merritt Ives had joined the firm of N. Currier, which Nathaniel Currier started in 1834 when he bought out his employer, the Pendleton company, America’s first lithography house. Currier retired in 1880 after more than 50 years in lithography.  Ives stayed with the company for almost 40 years, dying in 1895.

The artist who did the original illustration for this print is unidentified.  Lake George (Lac George), Quebec, is in the Laurentide region, about one hour’s drive north of Montreal.  The areas has hundreds of small lakes, such as shown here, and is a favorite destination for outdoor activities, including fishing and hunting.
